What is a Lavender Marriage?
I certainly hadn’t heard of the term until recently, so I took a dive into the history books to get some perspective on it and found out that the term likely comes from the colour lavender’s association and use as a symbol by early gay rights activists.
As I took a look I also found out that Gen Z are embracing this and re-energising this old trend, making it their own. After all Gen Z is known for its open-mindedness and willingness to challenge traditional norms, and in the process is redefining lavender marriages in ways that make sense for today’s world.
But what exactly are lavender marriages, and why are more people considering them as an alternative form of partnership?
In this blog, we’ll look into the origins of lavender marriages, explore why they’re becoming popular again, and look at the potential benefits and motivations for embracing them.
An Historical Perspective
Originally, a lavender marriage referred to a union that allowed one or both partners to conceal their sexuality, especially when identifying as LGBTQ+ was socially unacceptable or even dangerous.
This term first gained traction in Hollywood’s Golden Age, where public figures entered into these arrangements to protect their careers, and some historians believe this type of marriage dates back even further in political and aristocratic circles. Apparently the term was first coined in the British press as far back as the 1890’s.

The Evolution of Lavender Marriages for Modern Times
Today, lavender marriages have taken on a new meaning. Rather than being rooted in secrecy or societal pressure, Gen Z and Millennials are embracing them as a form of non-traditional partnership, one that values friendship, shared goals, and personal freedom over romance and sexual exclusivity.
For some, this may mean a marriage without romantic love; for others, it might mean living a shared life with someone who aligns with their values, priorities, and lifestyle rather than someone who fulfils a traditional romantic role.
Why Are People Choosing Lavender Marriages?
- Challenging Traditional Marital Norms
Many younger people are questioning the traditional expectations of marriage. The rising interest in lavender marriages reflects a desire to prioritise partnership as a supportive arrangement, based more on compatibility and shared purpose than romantic attraction or societal expectations.
- The Emphasis on Personal Identity and Freedom
As more people embrace their identities without fear, they find value in having personal freedom within committed relationships. Lavender marriages allow partners to maintain their individual identities, including their sexual orientation or lifestyle choices, without feeling pressure to conform to societal standards or expectations for a “typical” marriage.
- An Alternative to Navigating Marriage and Parenthood
For those who want to have children or create a stable family structure, a lavender marriage can provide a reliable foundation for co-parenting, shared financial goals, and emotional support. By forming a life partnership with a like-minded friend or companion, individuals can build families that reflect their values.
- Increasing Financial and Social Support
Marriage comes with many legal and financial benefits. Lavender marriages, often practical in nature, can provide a strong support system that helps both partners manage financial challenges, health care, and shared living arrangements, all while navigating personal and professional goals together.
- Companionship and Emotional Intimacy Over Romance
In a world where long-lasting romance can feel uncertain, lavender marriages offer a dependable form of companionship. These partnerships emphasise friendship, emotional intimacy, and a deep bond without the pressures or expectations of maintaining a romantic relationship.
Benefits of Lavender Marriages
- Emotional Stability and Support
Many people find that forming a life partnership based on trust, friendship, and mutual respect is more fulfilling and stable than a traditional marriage. Lavender marriages foster emotional support and companionship without the potential complications that can come from romance-based relationships.
- Freedom to Embrace Different Forms of Intimacy
In a lavender marriage, partners can explore personal fulfilment and intimacy outside of their relationship. This freedom to express different aspects of themselves can enrich both the individual and the partnership as a whole.
- A Pragmatic Approach to Financial Planning and Goals
Financial stability is an increasingly significant factor for younger generations. Lavender marriages offer a way to pool resources, share expenses, and work toward common financial goals, making them attractive for those who value practicality.
- A Support System for Parenting
In a lavender marriage, individuals can have a reliable parenting partner who shares their values and parenting philosophy. Co-parenting in this setup can foster a strong foundation for children, who benefit from having parents dedicated to their well-being in a stable, supportive environment.
- Redefining Family Structures
Lavender marriages help to expand our understanding of what family can mean. In these partnerships, families are built on genuine connections, loyalty, and support rather than traditional marital roles. This approach resonates with people who value unconventional lifestyles and personal freedom.
Why Should We Consider Lavender Marriages?
- A Remedy for Modern Relationship Pressures
Traditional marriages come with societal expectations and pressures that can be hard to navigate. Lavender marriages offer an alternative that frees people from these pressures, allowing them to focus on personal fulfilment, shared ambitions, and mutual respect.
- Flexibility and Respect for Individual Choices
Unlike traditional marriages, lavender marriages provide flexibility for both partners to explore other aspects of their identity and personal goals without conflict. This flexibility makes them ideal for people who prioritize independence.
- A Healthy Approach to Shared Responsibilities
Lavender marriages often emphasise mutual goals, including shared responsibilities, decision-making, and partnership support. This can create a healthy, balanced dynamic where both partners feel equally valued and empowered.
- A Progressive Model for Future Generations
For Gen Z and Millennials, lavender marriages represent a future where partnership can be tailored to fit the unique needs of each individual. By embracing this progressive model, we can challenge outdated conventions and help redefine marriage for future generations.
Gen Z is reportedly more open to lavender marriages than previous generations, but the concept has evolved.
Today’s generation is transforming it as an expression of personal choice and an alternative family structure. Gen Z is more likely to prioritise emotional connections, companionship, and mutual goals in relationships, sometimes valuing these factors over traditional romantic or sexual norms. Some Gen Z lavender marriages reflect this shift: rather than being driven by a need to hide sexuality, they’re about redefining marriage as a partnership based on shared values, lifestyle preferences, and social or financial stability.
So how do Celebrants feature in this revitalised trend?
Easily, because what we celebrate and urge folk to celebrate is love in all of its multi-faceted glory, and that doesn’t just mean what we would term as traditional love.
We love our friends as equally, sometimes more than we can love a partner.
For many sharing, creating and navigating a life with a trusted partner, can be more important than romantic love, so why not have a ceremony to reflect how real that connection is.
