What is a Lavender Marriage? 

I certainly hadn’t heard of the term until recently, so I took a dive into the history books to get some perspective on it and found out that the term likely comes from the colour lavender’s association and use as a symbol by early gay rights activists. 

As I took a look I also found out that Gen Z  are embracing this and re-energising this old trend, making it their own. After all Gen Z is  known for its open-mindedness and willingness to challenge traditional norms, and in the process is redefining lavender marriages in ways that make sense for today’s world. 

But what exactly are lavender marriages, and why are more people considering them as an alternative form of partnership?

An Historical Perspective

Originally, a lavender marriage referred to a union that allowed one or both partners to conceal their sexuality, especially when identifying as LGBTQ+ was socially unacceptable or even dangerous.

Apparently the term was first coined in the British press as far back as the 1890’s.
